Description

Late 20th century oil on canvas still life painting by Robert Cox. Depicts a bouquet of pink, yellow, and purple roses / peonies in a round vase. Signed in lower right. Artistic Interiors Inc - Certification Number 054408L. Carved / beveled giltwood frame with linen mat / border.

"Born on July 14th, 1934 in Mt Holly, New Jersey, Cox studied at the Katharine Gibbs School of Art from 1953 until 1956 and then joined Mayhew Peakes Inc. as a graphic designer. He resigned in 1962 and moved to California, where he married Marjorie Cox in 1966.

He found much inspiration for his floral paintings in California and became one of the most prolific painters of the 1970s and 1980s. He employed the palette knife to create his stylized flowers, often selling his paintings for little money because he believed that original art should be available for the general public to enjoy.

Cox was a founder member of the Art Workers Coalition and very active in promoting the rights of artists. He was awarded the Brown Hammerson Medal of Honor for services to art in 1986.

His work is represented in museums, galleries and private collections as well as overseas in Europe and Australia.

Robert Cox died on June 18th, 2001 in Escondido, California after a long illness.
