Framed print of “Dragster” by Jeff MacNelly, which features a rooster dressed in drag (an outfit somewhat reminiscent of Wonder Woman’s costume). / As The Chicago Tribune's Syndicated Editorial Cartoonist with three Pulitzer Prizes to his credit, Jeff MacNelly twice received the coveted National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award making him a pivotal national public figure. He also created the popular comic strip Shoe, which was about a newspaper's cranky editor and his associates, who were two-bit hacks that he portrayed as birds. He also illustrated Dave Barry's column for The Miami Herald's award winning Sunday Tropic Magazine. He lived in Rappahannock County, Virginia and won the Pulitzer in 1972, 1978 and 1985. He began his career at the Richmond "News Leader" at age 24 and joined the "Tribune" ten years later. Jeff's political cartoons were frequently reprinted in Newsweek Magazine and the Sunday New York Times and syndicated in thousands of newspapers around the world. He died at age 52 from lymphoma.
