Description
An exquisite antique Victorian Eastlake drop front secretary desk and bookcase; circa 1880s. Made of solid walnut accented in crotch walnut. Features a unique form having the appearance of a half cylinder desk with hutch and three lower drawers. Desk opens to a large work surface, pigeon holes cubbies and a drawer. Upper display retains the original glass opening to two adjustable shelves. Lower three drawers are graduated and dovetailed via the Knapp joint. Drawer pulls rest on raised burlwood panel with ornate brass and knocker design. Trimmed in classic eastlake medallions and carvings.
The Knapp joint was developed during the late Victoria Era in post Civil War United States. Patented by Charles Knapp of Waterloo, WI in 1867, the Knapp Joint was a huge breakthrough for the furniture industry; machines called routers made circular cuts in wood far quicker than by hand. The Knapp Joint is particularly unique to furniture as it was only used from 1870 until 1900. It is also referred to as the Pin and Cove Drawer.
