Description
Friesland, a province in the Netherlands, is where the Frisian Staart clock was produced. Staart is the Dutch word for tail and refers to the long pendulum on these clocks.
This Staart clock has an arch top oak case. A painted river and farm scene scene, gilt figural characters and ornate polychrome surround. The dial has Roman numerals and decorative brass hands. The face is flanked by Empire inspired ebonized columns with brass capitals. The sides of the case have an ornate scrolled design and the lower tail has a bronze mounted figure pointing upwards to show the pendulum (often known as peekaboo). The long ornate pendulum (tail) extends nearly the full length of the case. The face is signed by the artist on the verso. circa 1850s
Condition
Good Overall with age and use related wear. The clock is currently keeping time and chiming at the half and full hour. It is missing the pulley that would have held the central weight in place. Without it you have to move and re-hang the weight more frequently. There is a split in the case along the right edge of the tail. There is also a split in the bronze mount along the tail towards the bottom right. The lower left capital on the face is missing. Small split in the door. Some paint wear to the face. Missing one of the pin mounts for the face. This is not necessary to hang the face as 3 of the 4 are there.
