Vintage folk art pottery ginger jar / lidded vase / urn, hand painted in yellow with blue and white borders and a central motif of two dancing female figures dancing around urns of fruit and flowers. Signed “El Carmen – Foilan Talavera Spain” on base.

Juan Froilan was born in Extremadura, and was introduced to ceramics when his family moved to Talavera when he was just 10. After working in a local taller alongside his father and taking some classes in painting, in the mid-1980s he and his wife María opened Fábrica Taller Cerámica Artística J. A. Froilan. They recently purchased the contents of the historic El Carmen ceramics factory, originally established in 1849 to revive mayólica production in Talavera, which had been closed for several decades. They hope to put together a small museum in their taller with their collection of historic pieces and drawings to encourage interest in this local artistic patrimony.”

“Talavera pottery (Spanish: Talavera poblana) is a Mexican and Spanish pottery tradition from Talavera de la Reina, in Spain. On 2019, it was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.[1] The Mexican pottery is a type of majolica (faience) or tin-glazed earthenware, with a white base glaze typical of the type.[2] It comes from the town of San Pablo del Monte (in Tlaxcala) and the cities of Puebla, Atlixco, Cholula, and Tecali (all these four latter in the state of Puebla), because of the quality of the natural clay found there and the tradition of production which goes back to the 16th century.”
