Description

Vintage oil on canvas expressionist / semi-abstract cityscape painting of New York City and the Brooklyn Bridge by Robert Lebron. Signed in lower right. Framed in a gilded double frame with an off-white linen mat.

"Robert Lebron was born in 1928 in New York City. At a young age he moved from New York to Puerto Rico with his fisherman cousin who told Lebron about the perils of the sea. Inspired by these tales, Lebron and his cousin would illustrate these stories on old paper bags. He returned to New York a few years later and at age 14 was admitted to New York City's High School of Music and Arts.

He studied for three years before he gave in to his youthful impatience and joined the United States Air Force, forging his parents' signatures in order to join under age. He soon started drawing cartoons for the camp newspaper and quickly graduated to the animation department of the Air Force's motion picture unit. It was here that he worked with several Walt Disney artists who were working with military as civilians. Returning to New York, he attended the Arts Students' League for five years.

Robert Lebron developed his own personal technique during an extensive stay in Spain. Rendering buildings and cityscapes with a palette knife is one quality that distinguishes his work. His paintings continue to reflect his favorite theatrical and literary heroes. Many of the details in his paintings feature favorite characters from his childhood including a tiny dog (present in each painting) inspired by the comic strip, "Dickie Dare."

Lebron has been painting professionally for almost forty years and is recognized as an important American impressionist. He has had numerous successful shows and exhibitions and the number of collectors of his work is growing steadily. His paintings can be found in prestigious collections in the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, Great Britain, and Japan

Robert Lebron passed away August 31, 2013.
