Description
Antique Victorian parlor daybed / chaise lounge / fainting couch / Recamier. Made of mahogany featuring traditional Eastlake styling with a long pierced reticulated arm rest. A very comfortable and functional antique furnishing.
The Récamier sofa is a short, backless or partly backless sofa. The style dates back to ancient Egypt and was popular again during the reign of Louis XIV in the late 1600s. The sofa's popularity continued through Napoleon's reign.
The Récamier sofa is named after French society hostess Madame Récamier (1777–1849). In 1800, Jacques-Louis David painted a portrait of Madame Récamier posed elegantly on a Récamier sofa. The portrait became so famous that the public began calling the Directoire piece of furniture a Récamier.
