Description

An antique cedar trunk by E.R. Co, circa 1940s. Features a primitive American Country design with footed base, carved embellishments along the front and handles at the sides. The trunk is hinged and cedar lined. Part of E.R. Co's Forest Park Line.

Edward Roos & Co., now known as Ed Roos Co., was founded in Chicago in 1916 by Edward Roos, the youngest son of Roos Manufacturing Co.. In 1918, the company moved to Forest Park and began making cedar chests.

The Ed Roos cedar chests were originally bridal hope chests and were marketed worldwide. The same style chest was made from 1918 until the early 1950s. At one point, the Roos Cedar Chest factory was the largest industrial concern in Forest Park, employing 400 people.

Cedar chests were designed to store linens and woolens when not in use, and to kill moths that feed on these textiles.
