Description
An exquisite English Victorian Era bathroom double vanity. Features a gray and white vein marble top with scallopped soap holders and two porcelain sink basins by John Shanks (Britain). The spectacular mahogany base features a central carved medallion with "S" scrolled accents and ornate gadrooning throughout. The corners are acanthus carved and poised over square blocked, carved baluster pillars. The pillars are set on a plinth base with fluted rear support and shapely spandrels.
Shanks of Barrhead was a name known throughout the world. Much of what we take for granted in the bathroom was pioneered by John Shanks. However Shanks influence was wider and encompassed such things as ship's fittings, mortuary equipment, specialized hospital equipment, laboratory fittings. There is scarcely an individual who would not recognize the name Shanks and there are probably several million people use one of the products each and every day.
Purchased and imported from England in the 1980s.
Condition
Good Antique Condition; age and use related wear. There is a hairline in one sink and missing molding along lover left side of base. The sink originally had a backsplash which is no longer with it.
