Description
Set of four antique oak chairs with neoclassical pressbacks. Features ribbed spindle backs, cane seat and slendor legs connected by matching stretchers.
Pressback chairs were popular in the 1800s and 1900s, and were a significant part of American furniture history. They were created in response to the growing demand for carved and ornamented furniture, but were more affordable and faster to produce than hand-carved chairs. To make a pressback chair, manufacturers engraved patterns into a metal plate and then pressed the patterns into the wood. In 1902, Sears offered a dining chair with a pressback and "handsome carving" on the back for 63¢.
