Description

Immense mid 20th century pastel painting on board by Hilbert R. Whiteman, depicting a tropical fantasy scene featuring a topless brunette woman surrounded by terracotta sculptures, lush foliage, a parrot, and monkey. Signed in lower right corner. Bamboo pole frame. Marked/stamped "Property of HR Whiteman - HR Whiteman Art Studio" on reverse.

"WHITEMAN, H.R. age 96, died at peacefully in his sleep on January 4, 2011. Born September 14th, 1914 in Franklin, Ohio to H.R. Whiteman, Sr. and Laverna Shawhan, he attended Steele High School and the Dayton Art Institute and graduated in 1933. On February 20, 1937 he married Janet Reaver. He lived in Dayton, Ohio and was the Art Director for the Standard Register Company, the Vice President of Kemper Advertising Agency, and President of H.R. Advertising Art Studio. He retired in 1970 to travel and paint full-time. H.R. was an Eagle Scout, a Past President of the Dayton Advertising Club, a member of the Dayton Scottish Rite where he held the rank of 33rd Degree/Meritorious Service, Dayton Blue Lodge, Antioch Shrine Mounted Patrol, Triangle Riders Club, Wally Byam Airstream Club, and a 67-year member of the Dayton Order of FreeMasons. He was a volunteer for the Box 21 Rescue Squad, the Dayton Art Institute - Leonardo League, and the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History. He moved to New Mexico at age 88.
