Description

This matching pair of Chinese cloisonné enamel double-gourd (hulu) vases represents an exceptionally fine example of late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period metalwork, crafted as decorative export wares symbolizing longevity and prosperity. The vases feature a vibrant, hand-enameled turquoise-blue ground elaborately decorated in the round with rich, non-repeating auspicious motifs on the front and reverse faces. The front showcases an exotic, multi-colored bird perched amidst white and pink cherry blossoms on the lower bulb, paired with blooming white chrysanthemums and fluttering butterflies on the upper bulb. In contrast, the reverse face depicts large, multi-layered pink and white peonies—the traditional symbol of wealth and honor—on the bottom section, while winding winter plum blossoms and a songbird in mid-flight decorate the top. Dense side panels filled with shimmering gilt-wire cloud scrolls (wen), scrolling green foliage, and multi-layered lotus blossoms wrap seamlessly around the curves of both bulbs to tie the composition together.

Structurally, the narrow waist of each vase is flanked by substantial, heavily cast gilt-bronze dragon-shaped handles that boast crisp openwork detailing, individually defined scales, and a beautiful matte-gold finish. The elongated necks are adorned with a regal band of upright purple plantain leaves and bold ruyi-head borders, leading to original domed lids topped with thick, naturally curved gilt-bronze gourd stem finials. In terms of construction and condition, the vases are in excellent antique shape with smooth enamel surfaces, minimal age-related pitting, and completely intact wirework.
