Description

Late 19th Century Ships Binnacle by W. Hartmann. Binnacles are an important navigation tool. They are often in the helm of the ship and allowed sailors to maintain the correct course. This beautiful example has an octagonal case made from oak with brass fittings and removable copper dome with glass viewing window.. The compass is by A. Lietz Co of San Francisco. The firm incorporated in 1892. It was started by Adolph Lietz a German immigrant who came to America in 1879. The case includes the original lantern housing which would help the navigator by illuminating the compass.
