Monumental antique 1890 nautical maritime seascape oil painting on canvas by B.J. Harnett. The scene features a choppy ocean with sailboats / steamboat / rowboat and figures under a sunset. Signed Lower right. Features an exquisite 1880s frame with layered gesso including lattice, acanthus, beading and foliate designs.
Born November 16, 1847 at Whitstable, Kent, England, BJ Harnett came to the US about 1878. A landscape painter, he lived in California, Seattle, Washington, and New York City.
Harnett was British Vice-Consul in San Jose, Guatemala in 1894; an officer for Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and a British Calvary officer stationed in Dublin at one time. One of his paintings, oil on canvas 22"" x 36"", a view of the Seattle Fire and Mt. Rainier painted in 1889, is owned by the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, WA.
Harnett died on January 29, 1914 at Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York.
