A charming tallboy dresser / Chest of drawers by American of Martinsville, circa 1960s. Traditional design drawing inspiration from Louis XVI with a French Provincial finish. A rectangular form made from walnut with a natural matchbook top over a case of sixdrawers. Each drawer is made from oak with dovetailing and ornate brass hardware. The dresser has fluted stiles, panelled sides and is raised over square tapered feet. A heavy well built dresser made to stand the test of time. Marked along the back 6170-4 Chest. Upper right drawer bears the American of Martinsville stamp. Originally purchased from Town House Fine Furniture in Akron, Ohio.
American of Martinsville was Founded in 1906 by Virginia tobacco producers, American of Martinsville furniture line consisted of only bedroom furniture. In the early 1920s the company added dining room furniture and began to expand its offerings through a number of diverse styles. In the 1950s, as the company grew, so did American of Martinsville's reputation for styling and design leadership. With products in almost every design, the company continued to expand its offerings to cover the living room, in both wood and upholstered furniture.
