Description

Exquisite Antique Brittany (Bretagne) French dining room chairs, circa last quarter 19th century. Bretagne, was once an independent kingdom called Lesser Britain. Brittany is still recognized as one of the six Celtic nations in the world today, as the Celtic language, Breton, is still spoken there and many Celtic traditions still survive today. Drawing on the ornate and symbolic nature of Celtic Art, each piece was heavily carved and told a story though its symbolic carvings.

This beautiful set was hand crafted from chestnut featuring pierced nautical wheel like carvings, floret medallions and several scenes of men and women in traditional Celtic dress throughout. The various scenes showcase their strong work ethic, piety and enjoyment of life. Each chair seat showcases a central foliate medallion with windmill like "C" scroll leaves around it. The chairs are supported by square legs with block feet supported by H stretchers.
