Description
Pair of very large and impressive colored botanical prints on canvas depicting "Fruit and Stem of the Indian Fig" and "Multiflorous Crown - Imperial Fritillary," after originals by 16th century botanist Basilius Besler. Black painted beveled wood frame with factory distressed silver painted inner edge.
"These beautiful prints are reproductions of the famous ‘Hortus Eystettensis’ originally done by Basilius Besler in the early 1600s. His work, ‘Hortus Eystettensis’ (Garden of Eichst’tt), is man’s earliest documentation of a specific garden and over 1,000 varieties of flowers were depicted in 367 exquisitely engraved and colored plates. In the early 1600s, the Prince Bishop of Eichst’tt in Germany created what was probably the first comprehensive botanical garden devoted to flowering plants. Many of the exotic flowers were imported from the Americas and the Ottoman Empire. Besler documented this vast garden, depicting each plant as it bloomed throughout the four seasons. The Hortus Eystettensis is exceptional for many reasons, but mostly for the stunning flowers portrayed." (Source: Art Source International)
"Basilius Besler (1561-1629) was a respected Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, best known for his monumental florilegium, the Hortus Eystettensis, 1613." (Source: Wikipedia)
