Description

This handsome antique Scottish George III provincial chest of drawers, dating from the late 18th century, is an exceptional showcase of period British cabinetmaking. Constructed with a classic 2-over-3 drawer configuration, the chest possesses robust, stately vertical proportions characteristic of fine Scottish regional furniture. The expansive, mahogany top shows beautifully preserved grain flow and a deep amber-brown satin patina. The entire upper perimeter is bordered by a clean thumb-molded edge that uniformly overhangs the substantial casing below.

Each graduated drawer face features premium, highly figured mahogany veneers bordered by fine, light-colored inlaid wood stringing that flows into elegant, radiused curves at the corners. The drawers are centered with traditional un-escutcheoned mortise keyholes and fitted with classic polished brass swan-neck drop bail handles mounted on circular, multi-ringed backplates.

Pulling the drawers open reveals superb historical authenticity, showcasing robust hand-cut dovetail joinery with thin, masterfully struck necks and visible craftsman layout lines. In keeping with fine provincial Scottish traditions, the secondary construction utilizes heavy Scots pine for the drawer sides, bottoms, and linings. Turning the piece around reveals an equally authentic vertical plank backboard system secured with early fasteners, showing deep oxidation and structural foot-blocking. Notably, the back panel retains a partial, highly valuable historical paper label from "W. Brown & Co., Removers & Storers, George St., Edinburgh," anchoring its provenance firmly to the heart of historic Scotland.

The lower carcass transitions smoothly into a deep, step-molded waist trim, supported by commanding, hand-shaped ogee bracket feet featuring a double-curved silhouette and a subtly scalloped lower apron. Displaying authentic surface wear and rich coloration consistent with over two centuries of careful preservation, this majestic piece serves as a striking focal point for a home library, study, or traditional bedroom.
