Description
Vintage pair of two Maitland Smith dumbwaiter butler display tables / stands. Made of flamed mahogany featuring English / Georgian / Duncan Phyfe styling with three tiers, pedestal base and brass capped feet with castors.
Dumbwaiter tables, also known as side serving tables or buffets, are small tables with multiple shelves at different heights that are used to store and serve food. They were originally designed in England in the 1730s as a furniture alternative to human waiters, and became popular in upper-class homes, especially for banquets. The name "dumbwaiter" comes from the idea that the tables were "deaf and dumb" and couldn't hear or tell secrets.
In the mid-18th century, dumbwaiters were often used in pairs in large houses. Servants would bring in hot food, but leave the room during meals. After dinner, footmen would place the dumbwaiters at the ends of the table with drinks for the men to help themselves to. This allowed the conversation to continue after the staff had left for the evening.
