Description
Monumental Late 18th to Early 19th Century Italian carved sideboard. The hutch is centered by a beautiful family crest and crown with reclining cherubs holding on to the tail of a gnarling dragon. Beneath the crest are two large stepped shelves with intricate edgework supported by figural carved lions, mythical wing serpents and ornate corbels. The low relief backing is meticulously carved with Greek / Roman Scenes of Gods and Goddesses and framed within a scrolling border. A true work of artistry and craftmanship.
The buffet surface showcases an attractive walnut grain with a thick pronounced edge carved with a gadrooning motif centered with acanthus accents. Beneath this edge are 5 hand dovetailed drawers with an alternating motif of high relief dogs or lions and northwind faces flanked by Dionysus in a scrolling motif. The two larger drawers open to a blue felt line interior. The distinctive lower portion of the cabinet is characterized by three hand carved Atlas caryatids in high relief with arm outstretched overhead. Each flanked around cabinet doors with intriguing Classical Greek carved cameo scenes that open to a large storage area with shelf. The cabinet is supported by large claw feet with grotesque faces at the center. The carvings are continued into the side panels with additional figural, foliate detail and Egg and Dart moldings. Includes a large hand forged key to operate and lock each drawer and door. A truly breathtaking furnishing bringing a castle like aura into any space.
Procured from a historic 1922 waterfront estate on Orcas Island, Washington. Known for a Hollywood history, once home to Theda Bara and Silent Film producers with John Wayne and others regularly frequenting.
