Description

Antique English Staffordshire porcelain figurine in the shape of King Robert I, aka Robert the Bruce (King of Scotland from 1274-1329) standing with a hand on his nip and leaning on a cane or sword and stand of rocks. This brightly painted figure features a light blue underglaze tint and intricately detailed Highland dress including green and orange tartan plaid coat and stockings. Labeled in gold at base. Circa 1830-1870s. This figure can be found marked Sir William Wallace

Staffordshire figures are a type of popular pottery figurine made in England from the 18th century onward and often described as important English folk art - "of the people, for the people". Most Staffordshire figures made from 1740 to 1900 were produced by small potteries and makers' marks are generally absent. Most Victorian figures (1837 to 1900) were designed to stand on a shelf or mantlepiece and are therefore only modelled and decorated where visible from the front and sides. These are known as 'flatbacks'.
