Set of 9 antique French bowling game / boules cloutees / nailed balls - spheres of wood studded throughout with nails for durability. Four large, five small.

Petanque is a game played in the south of France (Lyonnaise) not unlike bocce ball in Italy. The French Petanque makers went all out to hand craft their game balls. The wooden ball is covered with nails of every size and shape.
