Description

A rare, very large, and impressive antique Rookwood and Gorham mantel vase by Amelia Sprague. It features Art Nouveau style pinecone / pine tree theme with sterling silver overlaid on iris glaze. Circa 1893. Shape 387, Size B, R 1358. Signed by Amelia B Sprague.

Alemlia Browne Sprague was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 8, 1870. She began decorating at Rookwood Pottery at the age of 17 in 1887, and remained there until 1903. Her work is usually found on Standard Glaze pieces and tended towards thicker under-slip applications. She died on December 7, 1951 in Lawrence, Kansas, but is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Collector interest in her pieces is considered to be above average.
