Description
Summer Rain is a masterpiece that was painted by Sakai Hoisu during the Edo-period (1603-1868). This contemporary example after the artist separates the work into eight canvas connected through four separate folding screens or room dividers. Each canvas is a masterfully hand painted oil painting framed in wood with gold trim. Summer Rain showcases a refreshing atmosphere of a thunderstorm in Japan. Also known as Summer and Autumn Flower Plants. Each of the four screens can stand alone. Mounting hardware could be added to hang along a wall. Backing is fabric covered.
The original work was painted on the reverse side of 'Wind God and Thunder God' a room divider by Ogata Korin. The work was removed from the backing in 1974 and mounted to its owns creen. Currently housed in the Tokyo National Museum.
