Description

This antique 19th-century French Empire toleware tier table, also classified as a table ouvrage, chiffonière or gueridon, is a stunning example of late Louis XVI or Directoire revival style, characterized by its vibrant mustard-yellow painted tôle (lacquered sheet metal) and elegant neoclassical proportions. The piece features a two-tiered circular construction, starting with a tray top rimmed by an intricate, pierced gilt-metal gallery and anchored by four ornate, classical wing-themed cast bronze ormolu corner mounts. The lower tier houses a cylindrical drum body equipped with a small curved cabinet door, which opens via a delicate metal pull knob to reveal an internal storage compartment. The exterior surfaces are beautifully adorned with trompe-l'œil Chinoiserie or pastoral transfer-ware scenes rendered in fine black ink, showcasing figures in a rural landscape framed by delicate geometric chevron and vine borders. The entire structure is supported by four slender, tapering faux-bamboo metal legs that terminate in decorative turned ring cuffs and petite ball feet.
