Description

This exceptional antique Eastlake wood washstand commode (circa 1880) is expertly crafted from premium solid wood, showcasing a rich golden finish and prominent, high-grade natural grain throughout. The prominent back gallery rail is embellished with stylized floral vines and line work, flanked by distinctively carved corner brackets. The versatile storage base features two stacked Knapp jointed drawers adorned with exquisite, spoon-carved geometric zigzag borders, micro-stippled detailing, and highly decorative brass Chippendale-style batwing bail pull handles, all centered by an authentic, integrated wooden quatrefoil keyhole escutcheon. Directly below, the spacious two-door lower cupboard displays recessed flat panels with stylized floral spray carvings, a period-accurate white ironstone porcelain pull knob, and original brass barrel hinges, making it a functional and visually striking statement piece for any historic or eclectic interior.

The Knapp joint was developed during the late Victorian Era in post Civil War United States. Patented by Charles Knapp of Waterloo, WI in 1867, the Knapp Joint was a huge breakthrough for the furniture industry; machines called routers made circular cuts in wood far quicker than by hand. The Knapp Joint is particularly unique to furniture as it was only used from 1870 until 1900. It is also referred to as the Pin and Cove Drawer.
