Mid Century Chinese Carved Elm Trunk Hope Chest Coffee Table Camphor Chinoiserie

Description

Mid 20th Century Chinese hand-carved Asian hope chest or coffee table. Intricately crafted from solid elm wood, showcasing elaborate high-relief narrative panels on its top and all sides. The exterior of the blanket chest is finished in a deep reddish-brown lacquer accented by an incised geometric diamond lattice or trellis border pattern. The primary focal points are the inset, natural wood panels framed in black lacquer, which display meticulously carved traditional village genre scenes featuring costumed figures, architectural pagodas, and stylized landscapes.

The trunk is secured with a prominent, circular brass medallion latch plate at the front and opens on a clean, unfinished interior that highlights the natural golden-honey grain of the elm wood. Elevating its dramatic design, the chest stands firmly on four short, robust legs sculpted with stylized wing-and-paw or bird-of-prey talon feet, making it a captivating statement piece for a bedroom footboard or eclectic living room.
