Description
Vintage etching, “Portrait of the Artist A. Guillaumin with the Hanged Man” by Cezanne. “One of only five etchings made by French Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne, prints played a relatively small role in his artistic production. It was only through the insistence of his friend and fellow artist Camille Pissaro that Cézanne commenced his printmaking activities. In 1873, Pissaro invited Cézanne and another close artistic associate, Armand Guillaumin (1841–1927), to engage in printmaking with the amateur etcher Dr. Gachet. At the press of Gachet (now known mostly for being the last doctor of Vincent van Gogh), Cézanne produced Portrait of the Artist A. Guillaumin with the "Hanged Man." This casual study of Guillaumin is of particular interest because of the small vignette in the upper left corner that depicts a tiny gallows with a hanged man. Most likely, this vignette alludes to a painting that Cézanne produced the previous year at Auvers-sur-Oise entitled The Hanged Man’s House. Gachet also encouraged the artists in his little colony around him to experiment with printmaking and to adopt an emblematic signature or mark. So the hanged man could also be Cézanne’s mark.”
