Peter Herrmann / Baltimore Potter /1825- 1901

Peter Herrmann was born in Bavaria, Germany August 10, 1825 to Richard and Catherine Herrmann. In 1844, Peter, then 19 years of age, arrived in the port of Baltimore with his parents and 10 year old sister Christina. According to the 1850 U. S. census, Peter, now 25 years, was married to Mary (nee Hart) 20 years, and they had a son, John P. , age 1. They were living at 150 Orleans St. in the 7th ward , Baltimore city. Peter’s occupation was listed as a Potter. According to his obituary he had learned his trade in Bavaria and early on, secured employment at the renowned Edwin Bennett pottery in Baltimore. He went into business for himself a few years later, around 1858, as the proprietor of Jackson Square Pottery which fronted on both 193 Mullikin Street and 306 E. Fayette Street. It is believed that he took over this business from his father, Richard and uncle, John Herrmann, who were listed as potters at that address in the 1851 Baltimore directory.
