Description
A large French early 20th century Newel Post or Floor Lamp. Features a bronzed spelter figure in the form of a 16th century warrior or knight in full armour and draped cloaks with flambeau shade.
The warrior is holding a torch with opaque flambeau shade, electrified with a sword, impressive helmet and armour. Set on a decorative base with filigree and scrolling design. Stamped with the 'Fabrication Francaise' Paris foundry mark.
This foundry mark is often found on high quality French bronze or spelter figures. This company was first known of in 1892 and typically cast in spelter rather than bronze, the pieces then finished with a patina to replicate a bronze casting. The company continued castings for export markets until 1915.
Newel post lamps were used in Victorian and Edwardian homes to light the staircase to avoid falls and other misadventures. The newel post lamp was affixed to the top of the newel post, which is the column found at the foot of a staircase and used to support the railing or banister.
