Exquisite Antique Brittany (Bretagne) French China Hutch / Cupboard, circa last quarter 19th century. Bretagne, was once an independent kingdom called Lesser Britain. Brittany is still recognized as one of the six Celtic nations in the world today, as the Celtic language, Breton, is still spoken there and many Celtic traditions still survive today. Drawing on the ornate and symbolic nature of Celtic Art, each piece was heavily carved and told a story though its symbolic carvings.
This beautiful sideboard was hand crafted from chestnut featuring pierced nautical wheel like carvings, leaf / berry motifs several scenes of men and women in traditional Celtic dress throughout. The various scenes showcase their strong work ethic, piety and enjoyment of life.
The buffet portion of the piece features three felt line drawers above lower lockable cabinet storage space. The hutch portion of the cabinet has large figural supports, a lower drawer and three additional lockable large storage area. The cabinet is supported by bun feature and features a lower apron of carved foliate medallions. A truly magnificent piece that will command attention in any space.
