Background
Born in Leipzig, Germany, Vernon fled the Nazis with her family and arrived in New York City when she was ten years old. She learned about business and merchandising from her father, who established a leather goods company.
Founding the company
In 1951, Vernon started her business from home with a kitchen table, 24-karat gold monogram lettering, handbags, and belts.
Company growth
The company grew to include nine catalogs, 15 outlet stores, two websites, and a business-to-business division. At its peak, it had almost $300 million in annual sales.
Public offering
In 1987, Vernon became the first woman to found a company publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange.
Philanthropy
Vernon was a philanthropist who served on the boards of several non-profit organizations. She also gifted the Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House to New York University, which houses the university's creative writing program.
Legacy
