Description
Exception mid 19th century Italian Renaissance Revival Savonarola Curule Arm Chair. Features a meticulously carved walnut frame with leather seat. The back is showcased by a winged lion holding a tablet beneath a shield. Both motifs are surrounded by neoclassical ribboning and carved foliate. The crest rail is arched with converging S scrolls with robust medallions and an Egg and Dart carved molding. The backing has a unique topper of tulips beneath what appears to be a hat or crown. Leading down from the back to the downswept arms are high relief northwind faces. Each breathing acanthus leaf from their mouth. Beneath the arms the "X" form supports are carved along the front with a vine and leaf motif. Chair center has circular beaded medallion with northwind face, reminiscent of the Sun. The contoured legs terminate to claw feet, each connected from front to back with acanthus and fluted detail. A truly remarkable chair that is really unparallel to any other example out there.
