Description
A beautiful Chinese elmwood table and four chairs. The table features traditional Ming style form. A square beautifully grained top with contoured support at each corner and square legs leading to flared foot. The four late "Officials Hat" side chairs feature traditional yoke back, contoured splat, paneled seat and jointed legs with serpentine aprons. Constructed via mortise and tenon joinery. Includes four upholstered cushions that attach to the chair stiles via velcro.
The Chinese term ‘official’s cap chair’ (guanmaoyi) has yet to be discovered in pre-20th century texts. Nonetheless, the name reflects the shape of the sculpted crestrail, which appears like a winged official’s hat; it also may suggest the common use by officials. The Chinese term ‘chair with four protruding ends’ (sichutou yizi) describes the extended crestrail and handgrips, which may be truncated with flat ends or finished like calligraphic brushstroke with rounded or lilted ends.
Given its size this table set has a very versatile form and use. Great for Mahjong or card games. Perfect for a small breakfast room or dining space.
