Description
Impressive mid 20th century Chinese coromandel lacquered eight panel folding screen featuring a grand Palace / Courtyard scene. In this scene, the Emperor sits central, flanked by Geishas, musicians and dancers. At the front gate there are Samurai guards, and in the back room, figures gamble and play games. The Palace has traditional Chinese elements with gnarled pines, Willow trees, and Pagoda style architecture. The border has a repeating pattern of mythical Dragons / Serpents, and the bottom is adorned with scholars tools / ancient pots and garden elements.
The back of the screen has a more minimalist panorama featuring sculptural scholars rocks, bamboo stalks, and Phoenix birds. Scholars' rocks, or gongshi, were prized by Chinese artists as a source of inspiration for painting, poetry and calligraphy. The scene is bordered with bamboo leaves scattered throughout. Brass capped feet.
