Antique J.E. Caldwell & Co French Delft Porcelain Mantel Clock 10"

Description

Antique mantel clock was retailed by J.E. Caldwell & Co., an opulent and highly prestigious luxury jeweler and silversmith founded in Philadelphia in 1839. While the dial is signed by J.E. Caldwell, the firm did not manufacture their own clock cases or movements. Instead, they partnered with high-end European clockmakers—predominantly French and German firms—to import top-tier horological pieces to retail to their wealthy American clientele. Works marked P.S., case marked 362.

This piece features a beautifully molded faience/porcelain case decorated in a classical French style, highlighted by the striking cobalt blue and red hand-painted Delft style accents over a white glazed ground. The arched top pediment is prominently adorned with a molded grotesque mask (Pan or a satyr - half man half ram) flanked by neoclassical scrollwork and topped with decorative finials. The central gilt brass dial features a decorative repoussé center, dark Arabic numerals, and distinct dual winding arbors (holes) indicating a mechanical time-and-strike movement. Circa late 19th century (1880–1890).

Discoloration to porcelain; wear to face; tarnish; chip to front right foot.
