Description

Known for her spirited take on traditional tassel-and-trim style, decorator Celerie Kemble has attracted a discerning clientele that includes such tastemakers as Tory Burch and Lela Rose. A fourth-generation native of Palm Beach, Florida, she heads the Manhattan branch of Kemble Interiors, a firm founded more than 30 years ago by her mother, celebrated designer Mimi McMakin. Now Kemble is translating her signature blend of pragmatism and panache into a new 63-piece furniture line for Henredon. Dickerson Collection.

Inspired by the great rooms of Billy Baldwin, Dorothy Draper, Tony Duquette, and Sister Parish, the collection is defined by its careful attention to craftsmanship, patina, and scale—much like the one-of-a-kind vintage and antique finds Kemble often selects for her clients’ homes. “The designers I most admire chose every piece with a sense of ‘Hooray! This is the one,’” she says. “I hope my furniture is just as distinctive.”

Kemble’s creations are solid and dramatic, boasting urbane shapes in sumptuous yet sturdy materials. The items range from an ebonized mahogany étagère with octagonal compartments to a bureau clad in lacquered cream leather to a Philippine-mahogany canopy bed painted off-white. Kemble even managed to address her own recurring problem of insufficient dinner-party capacity with a removable-glass-top cocktail table that, flipped sideways on its base, can be transformed into a dining table. And to complement the furniture, Henredon’s sister company, Maitland-Smith, is producing an extensive line of Kemble-conceived lighting and accessories, including an Art Deco–style chandelier, a stitched-leather bar cart, and decorative boxes.

“Everything a room needs is accounted for,” says Todd Sessa, vice president of design and merchandising for Henredon and Maitland-Smith, noting that Kemble is already at work on more pieces. “These are not just my versions of the basics,” she adds. “Each design is intended to make a space sizzle.”
