Description
Late 19th - early 20th century Orsat gas analyzer apparatus with absorption pipettes and hardwood case, produced by E.H. Sargent & Company.
"An Orsat gas analyser or Orsat apparatus is a piece of laboratory equipment used to analyse a gas sample (typically fossil fuel flue gas) for its oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide content. Although largely replaced by instrumental techniques, the Orsat remains a reliable method of measurement and is relatively simple to use. The apparatus was invented by Louis Orsat who reported it in the Annales des Mines in 1875. There was an earlier report by Thomas Egleston in 1873." (Source: Wikipedia)
"In 1849, Ezekiel H Sargent was partner in a drug store in Chicago selling assaying equipment to gold prospectors. In 1852, he became the sole owner and renamed the company E H Sargent & Company. He was wiped out in the 1871 Chicago fire but recovered and published his first catalog in 1875, becoming the first US mail order instrument supplier. They acquired Richards & Company of New York in 1904. In 1968, they merged with the W M Welch Company (q.v.) to become Sargent-Welch. In 1989 they were purchased by VWR International and continue in business today as a supplier of science education supplies in Buffalo Grove, Illinois." (Source: Analog Weather)
