"The Herend Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1826 by Vince Stingl in the village of Herend near Lake Balaton. This was located in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in Hungary. In the following years, the manufactory of the traditional stone pots and porcelain development research continued. The research required so much money that the owner had to sell the factory to Mór Fischer in 1839. Manufacturing fine china porcelain ware started in 1839 and hasn’t been stopped. Since the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 – where Herend won a gold medal – the factory has had the patronage of royal and noble families. The manufactory was introduced to the public at the first World’s Fair in Paris in 1855, gaining worldwide attention and fame. In 1867 Mór Fischer is raised to Hungarian Nobility, thereafter bearing the former name “Farkasházy”. He became the official purveyor to the royal family – Franz Joseph – in 1872. In 1874, the factory management was given to Mór Fischer’s sons. In 1884 Fischer’s son fail to overcome difficulties and sell the Manufactory to the state. The first Herend Porcelain Manufactory Ltd. is founded. In 1896 The Manufactory is closed, the same year is bought by Jenő Fischer, Mór Fischer’s grandson. During the First World War output was reduced to a trickle, most of the workers were called up into the army and the factory was hardly able to function. In 1923 The Manufactory is turned into a joint-stock company with Dr. Gyula Gulden as managing director. At the 1933 Chicago, World Exposition, the American market opens up to the factory. The Herend Porcelain Manufactory is nationalized in 1948. In 1981 Herend is separated from the Fine Ceramics Industry Works and becomes an independent enterprise. In 1992 The Community of European Porcelain Makers is founded: six manufactories with long tradition of crafting hand-made porcelain (Vienna, Berlin, Herend, Ludwigsburg, Meissen and Sevres) conclude an agreement to foster the idea of manufacture (making their own ware, hand painting, nurturing applied art traditions and training apprentices). On 30th of June the Herend Porcelain Manufactory Ltd. is founded as the legal successor of Herend Porcelain Manufactory. In 1993 the factory was privatized, and now it is 75 percent owned by its employees. The Herend Porcelain Manufactory now exports to over 60 countries, e. g. to Russia, Italy, the United States, and Japan." (Herend Experts)
