Description

Japanese gyotaku print of a bluefish. Signed in plate by the artist. Originally produced by the FishAye Trading Company, beach theme. Re-framed in black with mottled navy blue mat.

Provenance:
Estate of J. Frederic Gagel, owner of multiple Thoroughbred race horses that competed in the Narragansett Special and Kentucky Derby. Their family heritage was strongly intertwined with the military having officers in battles dating back to the American Revolution.

Bluefish: Schools of bluefish are a sight to behold when they come on to bait – any bait – it turns into a bluefish blitz. Bluefish have incredibly strong jaws rimmed with razor sharp teeth. These fish are plentiful and stay around all summer in Cape Cod waters.

“Gyotaku is a traditional form of Japanese art that began over 100 years ago as a way for fishermen to keep a record of the fish they caught. They would apply sumi ink to one side of a freshly caught fish, then cover the fish with rice paper and rub to create an exact image of the fish.
