Description
Vintage art nouveau style bronze table lamp after Mathurin Moreau in the shape of a branch entwined with ivy leaves, from which a female figure swings; the top of the branch curves down, finishing in an orange and white tulip shaped shade. Marked M. Moreau at rear of base.
“Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) was a French sculptor in the academic style. He was born in Dijon, first exhibited in the 1848 Salon, and finally received a medal of honor from the Salon in 1897. He was made mayor of the XIXe arrondissement, Paris, and in 1912 had a street named in his honor. Moreau became one of the most sought-after and important sculptors of his time, both during the reign of Napoleon III as well as in the Belle Époque. In 1842 Moreau won the second Rome Prize. In 1848 he made his debut in the Salon, where he thereafter exhibited regularly and won prizes. In addition, Moreau sent the world exhibitions in 1855, 1867, 1878 and 1889. In addition to small bronzes, Mathurin Moreau also created a number of monuments and fountains with which he found international attention in Europe, North and South America.”
