2 Bronze Chimera of Arezzo Mythological Guardian Lion Snake Figurines 11"

Description

Pair of bronze mythological guardian lion / fu / foo dog figurines with pine cone like manes and snakes for tails. The style and stance are nearly identical to the Chimera of Arezzo – an ancient Etruscan sculpture – however these figures are missing the original goat’s head emerging from the lion’s side.

“The Chimera or Chimaera, according to Greek mythology, was a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid creature, composed of different animal parts from Lycia, Asia Minor. It is usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat protruding from its back, and a tail that might end with a snake's head.”

Condition

Good Overall - Spots/tarnish, missing a few scales / cones on mane.
