This antique medical textbook is a notable 19th-century pediatric volume titled "A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of Children" by Alfred Vogel, M.D. (Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Dorpat, Russia), translated and edited by H. Raphael, M.D. Published in New York by D. Appleton and Company in 1890 (located at 1, 3, and 5 Bond Street), this volume is designated as part of the "Appletons' Medical Library" series. It represents the "Third American from the Eighth German Edition, Revised and Enlarged" and is illustrated by six lithographic plates. The reverse of the title page formally documents its publication history with copyright entries stretching across 1869 and 1885.

Large sections of the blue pebbled cloth have peeled away entirely at the upper and lower right corners of the front board, exposing the raw, light-colored binder's cardboard underneath. The brown leather spine strip exhibits moderate scuffing, a web of surface drying cracks, and considerable color loss throughout, while the outer hinges and edges of the boards show bumping and fraying down to the inner core material.
