Description
Mid 20th century monumental Coromandel black lacquer screen. Features two decorative designs; including cranes amist the treetops and clouds on one side; and along the other, gods or dieties in a field of clouds with animals, pagodas and other traditional details. Ornately carved with exceptional detail.
1 鶴 hè crane(s)
2 壽 shòu longevity
3 圖 tú picture; painting
The title of this art is called “Crane Longevity Painting” or “Painting of Crane and Longevity”. The reading order is from right to left. The character 壽 (2) is quite unique as I can see the character 島 (island) in (2-2), and 出 (leaving) in (2-1), as the cranes are heading out from the stone island. Also cranes and pine (both in the picture) are symbols of longevity, as the nature is immortal. And you also can see pine needles around the border.
Condition
Good condition overall, some wear commensurate with age and use, light distressing, see pictures.
